America’s Cup: Jury decision released – Cup racing can continue with voluntary compliance to Safety Rules

The America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA) announced today that racing can proceed as scheduled if the teams adhere to the AC72 Class Rule as well as to the 37 safety rules established following the Artemis Racing capsize that resulted in the tragic death of Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson in May.

A decision today by the International Jury upheld protests by Emirates Team New Zealand and Italy’s Luna Rossa Challenge that the Regatta Director alone could not change some of the regatta rules, even if he was acting in the best interests of all the sailors.

America’s Cup: Thursday morning briefing

America’s Cup

UPDATE: 1025 hours

Regatta Director Iain Murray said in his morning briefing that Luna Rossa Challenge has requested to sail the five-leg America’s Cup course, the configuration intended for the Louis Vuitton Cup Final and the America’s Cup Final. The target elapsed time is 25 minutes, or around 10 nautical miles.

During today’s racing period the tide will be at maximum flood, meaning a correction factor of +2.1 knots to the 20-knot wind limit.

Artemis Racing helmsman Nathan Outteridge gave a brief update on Sunday on the status of the stress tests being conducted on the team’s second AC72. Said Outteridge:

America’s Cup

No racing is scheduled today. It is a reserve day so the racecourse will not be a controlled area for team use.

Wednesday’s Schedule

ORACLE TEAM USA, however, was seen two-boat training this morning at 0930. The winds were light, 10 knots or less, with flat waters. Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Challenge have indicated they won’t be sailing today.
