Vasco Vascotto’s usual beaming smile tells a story in itself. But the charismatic Italian tactician of Audi Azzurra Sailing Team’s entry to this week’s Audi TP52 World Championship representing the colours of the host club, the Yacht Club Smeralda, reaffirmed today that there is no more stress than usual, as they seek to win the world title on their boat’s home waters.
Their record which speaks for itself - on the podium at four of the season’s five regattas - the ‘local’ team recently finished third overall on the Audi MedCup Circuit but the iconic Azzurra team was still the only TP52 team to have contested the full season and not won a 2011 Trophy regatta.
Porto Cervo, Italy. 3rd October 2011
Together with the other competitors in the Audi TP52 World Championship, Audi Azzurra Sailing Team had a productive training day in their home waters in Porto Cervo.
The Transpac 52 boats gathered in Porto Cervo for the Class World Championship with the cream of professional yachtsmen aboard, raced in a light north-north westerly breeze of approximately 7 knots, and which never reached more than 10 knots, during the Practice Race.
Conditions off the coast of Africa for the six Class40s in the Global Ocean Race (GOR) fleet continue to vary dramatically as the teams hunt for the elusive North East Trade Winds.
The South African duo of Nick Leggatt and Phillippa Hutton-Squire in sixth place on Phesheya-Racing finally dug into some breeze shortly before midnight on Sunday, releasing them from imprisonment in a wind vacuum 90 miles north-east of the Canaries.
